Alexandria Library Sit-In of 1939 — A Peaceful Protest Ahead of Its Time.

Size_550x415_alflogo11coloryl

The Foundation seeks to raise $7,500 for the Samuel Tucker Fund in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the 1939 sit-in at Alexandria Library.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of America's earliest known library sit-in, which took place at the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library in 1939 (originally called Alexandria Library). The non-violent protest, which involved five black men sitting and reading after being refused library cards, was organized by the African American attorney, Samuel W. Tucker.

Alexandria Library will continue the legacy of the peaceful protest ahead of its time and hopes to establish the Samuel W. Tucker Fund, which will provide Library programming and collections that will center on civil rights, human rights, the African American diaspora, social freedoms and equality.

We ask that you donate to the fund or show your support by eating at Holy Cow Burger, which will donate .25 to the charity of a person’s choice when they order.

MORE ABOUT THE ALEXANDRIA LIBRARY FOUNDATION

Chartered in 1998, the Alexandria Library Foundation was formed to enhance the Alexandria Library's services through private donations. In 1999, when asked for $50,000 to meet increased demand for books and electronic information for the new Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Library, the City approved instead a $25,000 challenge grant. The donors to the Foundation met this challenge. We would like to thank everyone for their generous support!

In 2000, with the opening of the new library, we asked the City to add $50,000 to our operating budget in response to the increased demand for materials and services. The City offered a second challenge grant of $25,000, which required matching funds by the Foundation. The continued generosity of the community is needed for the Alexandria Library to provide the excellence in service and materials our residents deserve.
