Supporting our communities starts with the children. Improving the chances of success for children in crisis starts with reading. A love of reading can make all the difference in academic success or failure for students.

Many children living in shelters are under the age of six, a critical stage in language and literacy development, and many of these children have no books in their lives.

Research has shown that reading aloud "is the single most important activity of building the knowledge required for the eventual success in reading."

The Reading Connection fills the gap for children who have limited exposure to books and reading.

Mission Statement

The Reading Connection is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading. This mission is accomplished by

• Volunteers who read aloud to children at shelters and community centers

• Donations that provide children with free, new books to keep

• Workshops that help parents encourage reading and literacy development

• Trainings of family support workers who promote the importance of reading.

Please note: We are partnering with ACT for Alexandria to send five percent of the funds raised in Spring2ACTion to the Boston Foundation to help those affected by the recent tragedy.
