American Red Cross

The Red Cross prevents & alleviates human suffering in face of emergencies by mobilizing power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

American Red Cross Response to Nepal Earthquake (as of 4/29)

The American Red Cross is committing $1,000,000 and mobilizing disaster specialists to help provide emergency humanitarian assistance following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. Efforts are part of a larger global Red Cross relief response, led by the Nepal Red Cross.

Eight American Red Cross disaster specialists are mobilized to support emergency relief, cash transfer programing, information management, recovery planning and IT/telecoms. The American Red Cross is also providing remote mapping and information management support and helping to reconnect separated families. Arrangements to send supplies from warehouses in Kuala Lumpar and Dubai, including non-food items such as tarps, buckets, kitchen sets and blankets, are in the works, although logistical transport remains a challenge.

For more details and updates about the response please visit www.redcross.org. Thank you for your support.

Disaster Relief

When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there. Last year our team responded to 471 local disasters. We helped 948 affected families with emergency food, shelter and supplies.

Health and Safety Services

From first aid, CPR and AED training to swimming and lifeguarding,Red Cross programs help people lead safer and healthier lives. We taught 57,680 people life-saving skills in classes throughout the region.

Service to the Armed Forces

The American Red Cross provides communication between men and women in the military stationed away from home and their families. This year, we provided services and assistance to over 1,716 military families.

International Services

The international tracing program helps local families find relatives with whom they have lost contact because of a natural disaster, war or internal conflict. Last year we worked on 46 international tracing cases.

Community Services

Our team reached 30,040 people with Red Cross community services by participating in community events such as safety fairs, parades and celebrations, and by providing community members with health-related and disaster information. Overall, the National Capital Region reached more that 190,000 people in the Washington metro area.

A Note About Volunteers:

We depend on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry out our work. Volunteers constitute 98 percent of our total workforce; they serve as members of our board, act as instructors teaching lifesaving skills, participate as disaster action team members, office administrators, event organizers and more.

Will you help us be there, for you and for your neighbors, in times of need?

Please give now, because help can’t wait.
